ELFM Musicathon, Leeds
This May Day weekend community radio station East Leeds FM will launch its second 24 hour Musicathon.
From 3pm on Saturday 1st May the Musicathon brings together a whole host of musicians and bands from across Leeds, performing non-stop from Seacroft Methodist Chapel. The whole event will be broadcast live online bringing a musical feast direct to your living room!
The Musicathon is all about promoting local acts and nurturing local talent. Last year over 300 people took part and performed at the event, with many thousands more listening in online. This year the organisers are hoping to attract a much larger audience as the event is part of the city-wide “Live at Leeds” Festival.
The Musicathon programme for this year includes folk, punk, swing and a whole array of performances from well-known bands through to pupils from local school David Young Community Academy and East Leeds Music Centre. ELFM are able to involve even more young people from East Leeds this year, thanks to the support of the Find Your Talent programme and Seacroft Manston Children & Young People’s Partnership.
Closing the show will be ‘The Next Generation’; a group of under 19 year olds, who will perform a special piece that they created through workshops during the Easter holidays. The ELFM Next Generation mentoring programme brings together young people and professional musicians to develop skills such as songwriting, performance skills and stagecraft.
‘Next Generation’ mentor Rich Huxley, from the band Hope and Social, said “It’s a great opportunity to work with enthusiastic, talented young people with drive to do something new, something original. We’re all really looking forward to this year’s Musicathon and having the chance to show off what they have achieved!”
With so much going on over the weekend, don’t worry if you miss any of it – you can listen again after the event by simply going to the website www.elfm.co.uk
As well as providing a platform for home-grown talent, the Musicathon also draws attention to ELFM’s bid to convert Seacroft Methodist Chapel into a permanent broadcast and recording space for the local community.
ELFM is a project run by Heads Together Productions, a community arts organisation which has been working in East Leeds for the past fifteen years. As well as monthly internet broadcasts, ELFM runs training workshops, live recording sessions and special festival broadcasts.
